On August 28th at around 5pm PST, listeners of the popular California Bay Area radio station 99.7 FM received a treat, as PSY’s viral hit, “Gangnam Style,” began to play.
The Top 40 radio station, 99-7 Now, is currently ranked as the third most popular radio station in the Bay Area, attracting 4.7% of the audience, according to the July 2012 Arbitron PPM 6+ ratings. The station is known for playing mainstream music from artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Rihanna, Owl City, Demi Lovato, and the like. PSY’s sudden appearance in the station’s afternoon mix with “Gangnam Style” was played in between Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” and RIhanna’s “Where Have You Been,” catching Bay Area K-pop fans by surprise.
It looks like PSY is slowly making his way into the Bay Area mainstream music scene, one radio play at a time!
Meanwhile, “Gangnam Style” is topping the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart at #1 this week. The track is also dominating YouTube’s most popular songs chart, edging out Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” for the number one spot.
